The material analysis of works of art aims to better understand the techniques of the ancient cultures and to preserve the cultural heritage for future generations. The analysis brings to light new and unique information for authentification, for conservation and to better understand the history of artistic techniques. this talk will cover many of the techniques used to study the Mona Lisa and other great works of art.
In April, 2008, UM Research Faculty were surveyed about their career experiences and satisfaction, sponsored by OVPR and the Research Policies Committee.

The Office of Human Research Compliance Review (OHRCR) has released a report, Survey of Investigator's Experiences in Human Research. This unique survey of UM investigators was developed and implemented by the UM Institute for Social Research (ISR) in partnership with OHRCR. The purpose of the survey is to obtain information from UM investigators to improve the UM Human Research Protection Program (HRPP).

Noboru Kikuchi, the Roger L. McCarthy Professor of Mechanical Engineering, will be the first director of Toyota Motor Corp.'s new Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRI-NA) located near the Ann Arbor campus.
The Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) has granted full accreditation to the UM, one of 15 institutions to receive the group's endorsement this year. AAHRPP accredits universities, hospitals and other organizations that demonstrate they provide participant safeguards beyond what the state and federal governments require.
OVPR honored four individuals for their outstanding contributions to research administration at a reception in the Michigan League on May 22. The 2008 recipients are (clockwise from upper left) Patricia Smith, Eve Gochis, Denise DuPrie and Kate Blakeman.
Dr. James R. Baker Jr. is the Distinguished University Innovator for 2008. Baker, a scientist in the Medical School and a successful entrepreneur, has conducted breakthrough research in nanotechnology materials and launched two startup companies based on the results. Lecture title: "Taking Nanotechnology from the Bench to the Bedside."
This October, 2007, Regional Conference was inspired by the National Academies Study, "Rising Above the Gathering Storm." Next steps are to prepare the proceedings and a report on proposed strategies that the URC universities can work on for state and regional economic growth. Conference funding was provided by the Lounsbery Foundation.
